Vietnam's Children: A Global Connection

Ha was recently identified for us as a candidate for the sponsorship program. When we learned of her circumstances we were fortunate to have a volunteer visiting Tan Lien who purchased a bike for her. This is her first bike. It will make going to school easier for her, and her days more joyful.

The world can be a beautiful place with your help.

Let us introduce you to Ha!

She is 10 years old and will begin 4th grade this September.  She will attend Tan Lien Primary School and is enrolled in our “Food for Thought” Lunch Project. The school reports that she is a good student who does well in her studies.  Tan Lien Commune in Lang Son Province is a designated Level 3 Rural Poor Area of Viet Nam.

She is one of 3 children living with her father. He works hard as a farmer to provide for his family. He is their only living parent as their mother passed away.

How Do I Become A Sponsor?

Our sponsoring families/individuals commit to one year of support initially, and hopefully to a long-term relationship with their sponsored child and family.

Our Sponsorship Volunteer is Kelly Larrivey, an adoptive mom with a child from Vietnam. To contact her about becoming a sponsor or to obtain more information, click here.

The Sponsorship Program

VNCGC sponsors vulnerable children and families in Viet Nam.  The children that receive sponsorship are very poor, and usually live in rural, ethnic minority areas of the country.

They are at risk of malnutrition and of dropping out of school.  In some cases, they cannot afford to go to school.  These children may also be in danger of losing their parent or guardian due to harsh economic conditions.

Our Sponsorship Program is unique in that we give our support directly to the child and their family. We visit each child’s home.  We may talk with their teacher or school principal or community elders.   We visit regularly to get to know the family and to ensure that the child’s situation is improving.

We emphasize a “whole family” approach to support, as we have learned that a one-child sponsorship may leave out other needy children in the same family.

We strive to address the major needs of the family, provide resources that improve their economic situation in the long term, and enhance the quality of life for the children.

The Sponsorship Program collaborates with VNCGC’s other charitable work, like our Food for Thought Lunch Project that provides hot lunch daily for school children, or our Bikes and Blankets Project that helps children get to school and keeps them warm at night.

Ultimately, we inspire our sponsored children, and in turn, they inspire us.  A child from Viet Nam is waiting to enrich your life!

What makes Our Sponsorship Program Special?

Our Sponsor Program has unique features.

We:

  • Visit and photograph the home and family of the child you sponsor so you will understand his/her living conditions and to ensure our support is making a difference
  • Gather information for you about his/her family life
  • Help exchange Letters and photographs 3 times per year.
  • Create an annual TET (New Year’s) card with photos of your family with the sponsored family approximately 3 times per year.
  • Provide a list of suggested questions for you to ask so you can learn even more about your family, and they can learn about your day-to-day life too!
  • Give gifts to the child and family each time letters are exchanged
  • Facilitate visits to your sponsored child/family should you wish to visit Viet Nam.
  • Provide specific gifts to the child and family if you wish through additional gift donations

Our program combines the best elements of individual and combined sponsorship models.

We do this by dedicating:

  • 60% of your yearly donation ($240) to purchasing food, clothing, boots, books and toys and deliver these items directly to the child and family.
  • 20% - 30% of your donation goes towards enrolling all the children in the family in school, and giving them a daily nutritional cooked lunch at school.  If possible, we also use these funds to enroll other poor students and to buy books for the school’s library.
  • We set aside 10% to cover our staff in Viet Nam.  They help us to provide these services efficiently, with dedication and attention to detail.
